A Wellington dumpster can physically hold more than you will want to pay for. The limit that matters is the weight included in the rental, which published Palm Beach County price lists put at about one ton on a small container and two or three tons on the larger ones. Past that, every ton is billed, because every roll-off load in the county is weighed on a scale.

Six boxes, about thirty seconds. You pick when to be called back, and that is when the phone rings.
Or call (728) 226-7144There are really two answers to the question. The first is the hauler's included weight, the tonnage folded into the flat price. Published lists from companies serving Palm Beach County commonly include around one ton with a 10-yard container and two to three tons with a 20- or 30-yard can, though some leave the figure unstated at the middle sizes. Ask for it in plain numbers before booking.
The second is what the truck can safely lift and carry on the road. A driver can refuse to haul a container that is too heavy or loaded past the top rail, and the fix is unloading part of it by hand on your driveway. You almost never reach that second limit with household goods. You can reach it with concrete, tile or dirt in a large container.
The Solid Waste Authority's tipping fee schedule, effective October 1, 2026, requires every customer to weigh out, and it bills by volume only when its scales are not working. So a Wellington roll-off is priced by the actual weight of what went in it, not by how full it looks. The same schedule charges $95 a ton for construction debris and says open-top roll-off containers are generally charged at that rate, while trash such as furniture is $42 a ton. A mixed load pays the higher category. That is why the published overage rates in the pricing table sit close to $95.
Weight follows the material, not the job. A few comparisons help:
An open container in a Wellington summer collects afternoon storm water, and carpet, mattresses, insulation and drywall soak it up. The scale weighs the water along with the debris. Keep a tarp on the container between loads, and load the absorbent material last if storms are coming. The county also adds a surcharge to any load that arrives at its facilities without a tarp, rope or cover holding it in.
The authority's transfer stations, including the one at 9743 Weisman Way in Royal Palm Beach, cannot accept concrete, block, brick, tile, roofing material, construction lumber, dirt or fill. Heavy roll-offs from Wellington ride instead to the North County Landfill Complex at 6330 North Jog Road, open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, or to an SWA-permitted private recycler. The landfill's Saturday hours help a weekend project, but authority facilities are closed on Sundays, so a container filled on Saturday night waits for Monday.
A bigger container does not raise the practical weight limit, it only adds room. For heavy jobs, a smaller container with a clear allowance often costs less than a large one that gets billed for three extra tons. The 30-yard dumpster page shows what the largest size is good for, and the remodel and roofing dumpster rental page covers heavy debris in more depth.
